If you have an offer from a UK university, the Student visa is the last big step before you fly. This guide covers what you need, what it costs and how long it takes, for students applying from Uganda.

Who can apply

You can apply for a Student visa if you are 16 or over, have an unconditional offer from a licensed UK university (shown on your CAS), can show enough money to support yourself and pay for your course, and can speak, read, write and understand English to the required level.

What you need

  • A valid passport
  • Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from your university
  • Proof of money for your course fees and living costs
  • Proof of your English level, usually a Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI, unless your university assesses it
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from a Home Office approved clinic, because Uganda is on the TB test list
  • Your academic documents listed on your CAS

How much it costs

  • Visa application fee from outside the UK: £558
  • Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 for each year of your visa, paid when you apply
  • TB test and English test fees, paid to the clinic and the test centre

Figures checked on GOV.UK in October 2026. Fees change, so always confirm on the official Student visa page before you pay.

How much money you need to show

On top of any course fees you still owe, you must show living costs of £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 a month in London, for up to 9 months. The money must have been in the account for at least 28 days in a row, ending no more than 31 days before you apply. Our proof of funds guide explains how to plan for this.

When to apply and how long it takes

You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, once you have your CAS. Outside the UK you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks of your biometrics appointment.

Can I bring my family?

Most students cannot. Dependants are only allowed for government-sponsored students, or for students on a PhD, other doctorate or research-based postgraduate degree.

Our counsellors check every document before you submit, so a missing statement or a wrong date does not cost you your intake. Book an appointment to start your visa checklist.
